Ccf vs therms: convert a natural gas bill without mixing units
Convert gas volume to heat using the factor on your statement, then compare per-unit rates and calculate variable and fixed charges.
Convert Ccf to therms with your billed factor and check the estimated charge.
Enter measured gas volume in Ccf, the billed therms-per-Ccf conversion factor, a price per therm, and a fixed monthly charge. A Ccf represents one hundred cubic feet. A therm represents 100,000 Btu of heat. Volume must be converted using the appropriate billed factor; heat content and other adjustments can vary. Use the conversion factor on your utility statement, not a national average.
Illustrative example: 50 Ccf × 1.03 therms per Ccf = 51.5 therms. At an illustrative $1.20 per therm, the variable charge is $61.80. Adding an $18 fixed charge gives $79.80. The effective price is $79.80 ÷ 51.5 = about $1.55 per therm.
The calculator assumes that the price entered includes every variable charge you want to compare. If your supply and delivery are listed separately per therm, add them before entering the rate, or calculate each component separately. It does not model tiers, seasonal riders, taxes, credits, or meter pressure adjustments not already included in your factor. With zero use, the total is the fixed charge and the effective unit price is undefined. This is a bill arithmetic aid, not an estimate of the heat your home needs.
